Finishing problem - advice needed
Tim Heidenreich

We have now resolved this issue with acetone, so no more advice is needed. Thanks to all for speedy responses.

------------------------------

My neighbor applied MinWax wipe-on polyurethane to an old cabinet. The product went into some fine cracks in the wood and turned white. He wants to fix it and has tried several products. I'm attaching a few photos for clarification.

Can anyone provide some advice that I can give him? Thanks.

I assume your friend did not blow the piece off first.  In all likely hood is is micro dust that got encapsulated in the wipe on poly.  It's always best to thin the WOP before application to stop this.  But, here we are.  To fix use a soft brush, toothbrush, and clean the area with a solvent, paint cleaner or mineral spirits.  This will dissolve the micro white bubble encapsulation.   Then wipe on a non wax Shellac, most sanding sealers are non waxed shellac.  Let it dry and then recoat with the WOP.  But always thin the Poly down first.  On a good day finishing is a PIA.  Have fun.

This looks very similar to blush that occurs with lacquer.  Probably due to moisture getting trapped in the finish.  Unfortunately I think he needs to remove the finish.  Acetone is probably the best solvent for polyurethane.  Once he gets it removed then re-sand and prep the surface.  I’d probably use dewaxed shellac as my first coat and then he can put the poly on over that.
