14 " bandsaw
kate hogan

Hello all.

I am looking at getting the 14" 1 HP bandsaw made by Bauer at harbor freight. Any input or insights? It is $599.00.

I have a used 9" . It is not strong enough for what I want. nor is it adjustable enough. I bought it just to see if I liked a bandsaw. I do, but want to be able to resaw bigger pieces. Input would be appreciated.

Bauer brand is a higher quality brand for HF. If I was looking for a bandsaw, I'd check out the facebook market place. You might find a better quality saw than the Bauer. Check out what Amazon has to offer, too.

That seems to be the concensus! Thanks!

Personally I wouldn’t buy it - not that I have anything against Harbor freight, they make some great tools. But two main reasons - Stationary tools are their specialty and there are some great deals on used machines out there for much less. Keep in mind some might need a tune up or new tires. Relatively easy (and fun in my eyes) tasks. And to be honest, that brand new bandsaw from Harbor freight is going to need some tuneup as well.  Every single one of my stationary tools was bought used - I’ve saved thousands and have been able to afford much larger and higher end machinery. My 24” bandsaw cost me about the same as that Harbor Freight.

Here are a couple examples:
Powermatic 14” bandsaw - the 141/143 models are considered by many to be the best ever made in this size. Here’s on on Marketplace for $400. A great deal.

Newer example of the venerable Delta 14”, with riser block for $500, in Bloomington.
Here’s a Delta knockoff (there are many knockoffs made because it’s a great design, Grizzly etc). $225

I bought a used Powermatic 14" thirty-four years ago.  Still going strong!

I have the Delta that Matt referenced below -got it used - and it has been a workhorse for me for many years.

I bought a 14" Chicago Machinery (by Harbor Freight, but lower tier than Bauer) and I'm probably going to be in another couple hundred dollars to get it working well. I'm going to buy tires and new blades since within a year the tires have cracked and the blade teeth are a mess. I wouldn't recommend it and wish I would have bought something nicer, but alas...

Kate, I'm slowly selling off some of my tools due to moving this fall. I have a grizzly 14" and a powermatic 14" both in pristine condition I'd consider selling now. I'm also in Brownsburg and you are welcome to come by and check them out.

Some people may tell you to get a larger bandsaw for resawing, but my Powermatic has been great for me. Never at a loss for power. But the tallest I can resaw is about 7". But a riser block goes for about $220 I think.

The grizzly is just your run of the mill G0555 model, but I do have the carter stabilizer guides on it. (I don't have a newer picture with the guides on)

Hope this helps,
Ed

Kate: i have no first hand experience.
If you want to resaw. I would recommend one with 1.5 hp and 12" height for resaw. Generally, your looking at $1500 new. Used, may be a better option, if resawing.
If no resawing, the Bauer may work well.
